From the moment Caroline entered this world she was fighter. Caroline was born at 34 week, weighing only 3lbs and 9 ounces. When Caroline was released to home, she cried for 16 to 18 hours a day; it took hours to drink an ounce of milk, and she began projectile vomiting. I knew something was wrong the doctors told me I just had to "try harder." But I didn't accept that answer and kept looking for the reason Caroline was so unhappy.
Around five months old, Caroline was diagnosed with severe acid reflux, failure to thrive, and severe global developmental delays. The treatment plan involved placement of a G-tube, a Nissen Fundiplication, and intense therapy provided by Early Intervention. After the procedures were performed, it was like a switch was flipped--Caroline stopped crying, almost completely. We also visited many specialists: genetics, neurology, ENT, allergist, immunology, cardiology, and the list goes on.
Caroline was delayed in meeting all of her milestones but we didn't know if that was because of her prematurity or a symptom of a larger issue. For nearly three years, I searched tirelessly for answer. And when I got the answer, I was really prepared for it. Because I was specifically told it Caroline didn't fit the profile. She was a girl, she smiled, she made some eye contact. The diagnosis was moderate to severe autism.
I started blogging pretty regularly after that diagnosis this is our family's story.
